Acquitted in arms case, 2 others on
Abdul Kadar, the Dhaka University student who was tortured in police custody, has been discharged from an arms case, one of the three cases he was implicated in.
Investigation of the two other cases in connection with robbery and carjacking is underway.
The cases were filed after Kadar was picked up by Khilgaon police from the capital's Segunbagicha around 1:30am on July 16.
Kadar, a student of biochemistry and molecular biology, said he was walking to his DU dormitory when police detained him.
He said police made the arrest and tortured him in custody even after he had shown his identity card. Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station, even chopped the calf muscle of his left leg with a cleaver, Kadar told a court in late July.
Police also tried to implicate him as a robber although a departmental probe later found him innocent. The probe also found that police did torture Kadar, falsely charging him with robbery and carjacking.
Following a media outcry, the High Court on July 28 ordered the inspector general of police to probe the incident.
Kadar was released on bail on August 3.
The HC bench led by Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore also ordered the IGP to suspend three police officers of Khilgaon Police Station including Helal Uddin for torturing Kadar in custody.
OC Helal Uddin, Sub-inspector Alam Badsha, and Assistant Sub-inspector Shahidur Rahman were closed on July 29.
The bench also directed the government to give all legal assistance to Kadar so he can move petitions for his bail.
Four months into the order, Judge Mohammad Rokanuzzaman of the Special Tribunal-8 of Dhaka on November 3 cleared Kadar of the charge of "possessing sharp weapons".
Mohammad Shahjahan, inspector of Detective Branch of Police, submitted the probe report to a Dhaka court in September appealing to relieve Kadar.
“No evidence was found to prove the charge against Kadar of possessing weapons,” the report said.
However, three other accused -- Mamun Hossain, Babu and Zafar -- of the case will have to face trial.
The carjacking case in which Kadar was implicated was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on July 14, two days before his arrest.
He was shown arrested in this case on July 19.
