Misgivings of voters get stronger
The voters of Narayanganj City Corporation are determined to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice although they are sceptical about a free and fair election.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, a day after the government kept from deploying the army as requested by the Election Commission (EC), locals said they will cast their votes for sure.
“People are quite conscious about their rights nowadays. They will definitely show up in poll centres no matter the army is there or not. We have to ensure our own security,” said Shourov Kumar Dey, a resident of Chashara.
The failure to deploy the army on election duty proves that the EC's does not have any power, said Sohorab Ahmed, a resident of Bandar area.
“How does the government talk about holding the parliamentary elections without the caretaker government system when the EC is not even free to hold a city corporation election?” he said.
The government has played a trick on the people of Narayanganj, according to Jahed Ali, a resident of Tanbazar area. “However, if the poll is held peacefully it would bring a good result and we will have an honest mayor,” he observed.
Almost half the voters of Narayanganj are female. They are also enthusiastic about casting their votes. “I will go to the poll centre in the morning since untoward incidents usually happens in the afternoon,” said Jobeda Khatun, a homemaker of Mission Para under ward-12.
Private university student Farhana Sultana is much exited about voting since this will be her first time. She said she is not that worried about security.
