Locals protest police role
Rofiqul Islam
Family members of a slain UP member, also local BNP leader, and locals formed a human chain at Fulgachh village under Sadar upazila yesterday protesting police inaction for over a year and demanding immediate arrest of the killers.
Family members alleged that the main accused and his accomplices are moving scot free under the nose of the law enforcers.
They alleged that identified criminals beat Rofiqul Islam, 46, member of Mogholhat union parishad and publicity secretary of same union BNP, dead over establishing supremacy in the village, at Sakoya Bazar of Aditmari upazila on October 28, 2010.
Amirula Begum Ranu, wife of Rofiqul, filed a murder case accusing Kala Joynal and Abdul Malek with Aditmari police station on the same night.
After about six months, main accused Abdul Malek got bail from the court as police prepared a charge sheet dropping his name from it, she said.
The younger brother of Rofiqul, Shogiqul Islam, said, “We are not satisfied with the charge sheet. So we placed naraji (objection) petition in this regard. Hearing of our petition will be held in the first week of November,” he said.
Amirula Begum and his two sons Roman Islam and Rakib Islam alleged that the main accused has been giving them life threat asking to withdraw the case.
“We informed the police several times, but they have simply turned a deaf ear to the matter," he said.
Secretary of district BNP Hafizar Rahman Babla alleged that police are not sincere to arrest Rofiqul's killer as they belong to ruling party.
Contacted, officer in-charge (OC) of Aditmari police station, Mahfuzur Rahman, said police prepared the charge sheet of the murder case after a thorough investigation.
“Police are conducting drives to arrest the killers," the OC told this correspondent.
