Administrator of church under fire
Local Christians formed a human chain in front of a church in Lalmonirhat town yesterday morning demanding removal of the church administrator for his alleged corruption, irregularities, and misbehaviour.
Earlier on Friday, they called a press conference in the church on the same issue.
"Tapon Barmon, administrator of Lalmonirhat Church, is involved in corruption, irregularities and fund misappropriation," said church Father Livingstone Hawlader who also took part in yesterday's human chain.
“In last five years, he did not discuss the amount of foreign fund with the Christian community people. According to rules, the church Father should be president of any development project that is run under Church Mission. But the administrator did not keep me as president of any of three development projects. Making himself all in all in the church, he misappropriates 80 percent of the fund,” the Father said.
Secretary of Lalmonirhat Church Somir Ranjon Nath said, “Most of the 870 Christians belonging to 210 families in Lalmonirhat are poor. Making project file for their development, Tapon Barmon brings fund from America and Germany, but he does not spend it for the purpose.”
"Tapon Barmon sold four bighas of land and some big trees worth about Tk 20 lakh under Lalmonirhat Church but he transferred all the money to India without spending it for development work of the church,” Sachin Chandro Barmon, a member of the church, said.
David Karmokar, another member of the church, said the administrator spends very little time in his office often misbehaves with the community people.
When contacted, church administrator Tapon Barmon claimed that all the allegations made against him by the community people are 'false, biased and baseless'.
"I have been running the church successfully for the last eight years. I never transferred money to India. I went to India several times as I married there. I did everything including selling of land and trees as per rules. The administrative council of Lalmonirhat Church takes resolution in the meeting and I only implement it,” he said.
