BCL man beaten dead
An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League was beaten to death allegedly by rival Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal men in Sylhet last night.
The dead, Al-Mamun Shihab, 19, of Dariapara area was a second-year student at Madan Mohan College.
BCL is a pro-Awami League student body and JCD pro-BNP.
Police and locals said a group of JCD men swooped on two BCL activists at the city's Zindabazar around 8:30pm and started beating them with sticks and iron rods.
The two were rushed to Osmani Medical College Hospital (OMCH), where Al-Mamun succumbed to his injuries around 9:30pm.
Hearing the news, some 40 BCL men vandalised around 20 shops at Zindabazar and set fire to eight motorbikes in front of the market.
A number of shopkeepers said they heard at least three crackers going off.
Sources said yesterday's incident was a sequel to the one on Monday night when a group of BCL supporters picked up two JCD men--Tilok Chowdhury and Azad--and beat them at the BCL office at Zallarpar.
On information, police rescued Tilok and Azad and admitted them to OMCH. Critically hurt, Tilok was sent to the capital for treatment late that night.
