Rangpur train derails 2 days after opening
Rangpur Express, the first intercity train between Dhaka and Rangpur inaugurated on Sunday, was derailed in Tangail yesterday morning due to a mistake of its driver.
The derailment delayed its journey to Rangpur by about seven hours causing immense suffering to the passengers.
Railway officials said the engine of the express train derailed along with a passenger coach at Mohera Railway Station at about 11:30am while giving passage to Silk City Express from Rajshahi.
“Usually, a train enters a side loop and waits there until the other train has passed the line. But driver of Rangpur Express continued running the train after entering the loop, causing the derailment,” said Rezaul Haque, assistant director (operation) of Bangladesh Railway.
The express later started for Rangpur with a new engine sent from Dhaka at about 6:30pm, leaving behind the derailed engine and coach in Tangail, he added.
The 11-compartment train runs twice daily, except on Sunday. It leaves Rangpur at 7:40pm and reaches Dhaka at 6:35am, taking almost 11 hours.
On the other hand, the train leaves Dhaka at 9:00am and is scheduled to reach Rangpur at 7:00pm.
