HC verdict on Aug 24
The High Court will deliver its verdict on August 24 on the writ petition challenging a remark of ATM Azharul Islam, acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, "undermining" the Supreme Court.
The HC bench of ATM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore fixed the date yesterday while concluding hearing on two rules.
Azharul at a press conference at Jamaat's party office on July 19 said the government scrapped the caretaker government system by exploiting the SC.
Prof Wahiduzzaman Chan, a teacher of Dhaka University, on July 25 filed a writ petition challenging the remark of the Jamaat leader and seeking necessary orders from the HC on the government to take legal action against him.
The petitioner also brought contempt of court charge against Azharul for his comment
The court on July 24 issued a rule asking Azharul to explain why he should not be punished for committing contempt of court by making the remark.
On August 9, it also issued another rule asking the government to explain why its inaction in taking steps against Azharul for his remark should not be declared illegal.
Advocate Manzill Musrhid appeared for the petitioner while Barrister Abdur Razzaq argued for Azharul.
