ACC set to sue ex-AL MP Akhteruzzaman
The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) approved the filing of a corruption case against Awami League leader and former lawmaker Akhteruzzaman Chowdhury Babu in connection with accumulating huge properties through illegal means.
Disclosing the ACC approval during a press briefing at the ACC head office, ACC Director General (admin) Col Hanif Iqbal yesterday told reporters that Babu hoarded properties worth over Tk 2.01 crore illegally and it did not match with his known sources of income.
Earlier, Babu submitted his wealth statement to the ACC according to an ACC notice that was served on him.
Col Hanif said Babu concealed information about his properties worth over Tk 1.62 crore in his wealth statement.
The commission gave approval to its Deputy Director Abul Kalam Azad at Chittagong district office for filing a case against Babu in connection with two separate offences.
The ACC would file the case under sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-corruption Commission Act, 2004 as well as section 5(2) of Anti-corruption Act, 1947 and section 15 Gha (5) of the Emergency Power Rules, 2007.
Meanwhile, Azad filed a corruption case against Chittagong Divisional Forest Officer Dewan Zafrul Hasan and his wife Seheli Begum on December 19.
The ACC official brought charges of illegally accumulating wealth worth over Tk 88.91 lakh and hiding information about wealth worth over Tk 1.18 lakh against them.
On December 18, Azad also filed a corruption case against Divisional Forest Officer Tapan Kumar De in connection with non-submission of wealth statement despite being served an ACC notice asking him to do so.
