The world's greatest sporting extravaganza, the football World Cup, started yesterday at the Soccer City in Johannesburg which will grip us like all the people of the world for the next thirty days with all its glory, charm, excitement, sorrows and happiness.
But even before a ball was kicked, the tournament has occasioned for immense joy for little Maisha Siddiqua Soha and her family, courtesy of The Daily Star-Rangs Toshiba World Cup Quiz 2010. The five-year old nursery student from the Little Jewels' School of Dhaka became the proud winner of the first prize -- an 8 CFT Toshiba refrigerator -- in the second round draw held at the historic Muslim Institute Auditorium here in Chittagong yesterday.
Soha and her family were having a picnic at their house on occasion of the start of the World Cup and the news of winning the prize magnified their happiness.
The second prize (a 24" Toshin LCD TV) went to Ms Shelly, a housewife from Pahartali in Chittagong.
This was the second draw out of six rounds for the World Cup quiz, the first one being held in Barisal on June 2. This time, unlike on that occasion, two Chittagonians won prizes while the other three were citizens of Dhaka.
The event was held at the auditorium of the Muslim institute, ornated with colourful banners and festoons for the occasion, in the afternoon in presence of hundreds of football fans and notable personalities of the city.
Inside the auditorium, World Cup fever was firmly felt as the crowd divided into two groups -- Argentina and Brazil -- when the Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam asked the audience which teams they would support during the tournament.
Mahfuz Anam urged everyone to support motherland Bangladesh as they are supporting Brazil and Argentina in a bid to take the nation forward.
"We will have to have a dream, we will have to have determination to build up ourselves for the biggest of challenges. When we started The Daily Star, there were many skeptics about our success, but we had the determination and now you see where the newspaper stands," said Mahfuz Anam.
He insisted on team effort apart from individual quality to be successful from every sphere, be it in football or in building a nation.
The chief guest of the event, legendary footballer of Bangladesh national team Satyajit Das Rupu, asked for the help of all to take forward the age-level football campaign as he sees it as the root of developing football in the country.
"As a member of Bangladesh Football Federa-tion, we are doing our best to bring back the former glory of our football. But we need your support in that venture. We need support from corporate houses and media to develop our football," he said.
Rupu brought on a loud cheer from the audience as wished to see both Brazil and Argentina in the final of the World Cup.
He thanked The Daily Star and Rangs Toshiba for this effort. He wished to see both Brazil and Argentina in the final of the World Cup.
Managing Director of Rangs Toshiba Rumee Hossain recited a poem from Nirmalendu Gun eulogising football. He urged football organisers to come up with new ideas to take the country's football ahead.
Noted literateur and educationalist Abul Momen praised the efforts of The Daily Star and the likeminded newspapers in their efforts to build a strong, balanced and successful nation. Citing examples of China and former East Germany, Momen urged everyone to take lessons from them to becoming successful in all spheres of life.
In the second part of draw, five prizes were up for grabs for the audience. The first prize (a 20 litre Toshin microwave oven) went to Anwar, a member of New Ananda Band Party of Comilla who was playing the drums to welcome the guests.
Noted singers Kalyani Ghosh and Shankar De kept the audience enchanted with folk and local songs before the draw. Selim SH Chowdhury, production manager and Abu Musud Bulbul, circulation manager of The Daily Star, jointly conducted the draw. Anisur Rahman, sports reporter assisted with the answers.
