CAAB chief may be sent back to BAF
Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh chief Air Commodore Sakeb Iqbal Khan Majlish is likely to be sent back to the Air Force, top CAAB officials said.
Air Commodore Mahmood Hossain, who was made CAAB chief for three months during the tenure of the last caretaker government, might replace Sakeb, they said.
Sakeb was made CAAB chairman in March last year.
A top CAAB official said the establishment ministry might make an announcement in this regard on Sunday.
Aviation experts alleged that CAAB failed to perform well as the regulatory body for country's civil aviation sector in the last few years.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations, in an audit report in August last year, mentioned a number of instances of irregularities and inefficiency of CAAB.
The UN agency also put CAAB on its Significant Safety Concern list for irregularities that include giving certificate to private airlines without maintaining the rules properly, said aviation expert Imran Asif.
Bangladesh is the only country in Asia to remain on the ICAO's safety concern list, he added.
Wishing anonymity, a Biman executive said officials from Air Force are appointed as CAAB high-ups and they go back to Air Force after a certain period of time. But many of them are not sincere in performing duties.
