100 judges to be appointed in lower courts

Says law minister

The government will take steps soon to appoint over 100 judges in the lower courts to quickly dispose of pending cases, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said yesterday.
He also said the government is planning to include the rules of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the syllabuses of public universities for law students.
Under the ADR system, cases are settled out of court on the basis of mutual understanding with the help of lawyers of both the parties, the minister said at the inaugural ceremony of a basic training course on judicial administration held at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the city.
He also said the government will enact a law to make the ADR system mandatory for disposal of cases.
The government has asked the law commission to make necessary recommendations to this end, he added.
Shafique Rahman said the government has another plan to amend the law concerned so that judges of the lower court cannot adjourned the hearing of the cases without any specific reason.
He asked the judges to discharge their duties with honesty and neutrality to uphold the constitution and establish the rule of law.
Ashraful Islam, director general in charge of Judicial Administration Training Institute, presided over the inaugural ceremony.
Forty-six assistant judges and judicial magistrates are taking part in the 27-day basic training programme.
At another programme, the law minister said the government will remove the legal barriers, if there is any, to develop the homeopathic medicine industries.
He asked the leaders of Bangladesh Homeopathic Medicine Manufacturers' Association (BHMMA) to make recommendations in this regard.
The law minister said this at a seminar on 'Legal complexities facing Homeopathic Medicine Industries' organised by BHMMA at Biam auditorium in the city.
