Dockworkers stage sit-in at Ctg port
Dock Shramik Oikya Parishad yesterday staged a three-hour sit-in at Chittagong port to press home their demands, including revival of dissolved Dock Workers Management Board (DWMB).
The other demands include reinstating them into service under the DWMB and reintroducing the stevedoring system by dissolving the berth operator system.
The workers' body, wearing shrouds and caps, had staged the protest in front of the office building of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) from 10am. Later, they brought out a rally and threatened to go on an indefinite strike from April 27 if their demands are not met by then.
Parishad Convener Ali Ashraf alleged that police had assaulted the workers who took part in the sit-in.
The protesters threatened to stop cargo handling at the port during the strike.
"If police interfere again, we will blockade all roads," Ashraf said.
The protesters will submit a memorandum to the CPA chairman at 11am today.
