Six villages under flood water
At least six villages under Pratapnagar union of Assassuni upazila were inundated as flood water entered the area collapsing an embankment at Harishkhali point on the river Kholpetua due to high tide on April 14 and 15.
The embankment, covering 200 feet at the point, collapsed because of the heavy pressure of water due to the violent tide inundating the area.
The affected villages include Modarbaria, Kurikaunia, Pratapnagar, Banyatala, Kalyanpur and Harishkhali.
Sources said over 3,000 people in the area remained marooned, at least 224 shrimp enclosures were submerged and shrimp as well as other fish worth Tk 10 lakh washed away.
Pratapnagar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Mannan said the villages were flooded as water was gushing through the breached embankment.
The situation is deteriorating as Water Development Board (WDB) failed to reconstruct the breached embankment, he added.
Assassuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gias Uddin said local people were trying to construct a ring embankment but failed due to heavy pressure of water from the river.
Mujibur Rahman, executive engineer of Satkhira Water Development Board, said they are trying to reconstruct the collapsed embankment.
