Objective journalism emphasised
Chittagong City Corporation mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury emphasised objective journalism by the newsmen to ensure proper service from the government.
He was addressing as the chief guest a daylong workshop on Digital Bangladesh organised by Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) at Chittagong Circuit House on Thursday.
The workshop was arranged in association with the A-to-I project of the Prime Minister's Office.
PIB Director General AKM Shamim Chowdhury moderated the workshop. Divisional Commissioner ANM Siddique, UNDP Assistant Country Director AKM Morshed, PIB Director (Training) Jahangir Hossain also spoke at the workshop.
Policy specialist of the project Ashik Saleh presented the keynote paper on 'Service at the People's Door' at the workshop.
The city mayor said people would be misguided if wrong information is published in different media.
He urged the journalists to work with more responsibilities. He said media are playing a great role in focusing on people's demand as well as on the government's activities.
Forty journalists working in different media at different districts under Chittagong division participated in the workshop.
Call for infrastructural dev
Speakers at a rally urged the government to take necessary measures for infrastructural development of the country's premier Chittagong Port to facilitate transit facilities to India.
They were addressing a rally organised by Dock Bandar Sramik Karmachari Federation in the Free Port area on Thursday.
Thanking the prime minister for her recent agreement with India for using Chittagong port as transit, the speakers said revenue of the country could be enhanced through the proposed transit facility of the port to India.
They said a reactionary section who is against the development of the port as well as Chittagong is opposing the issue.
They, however, observed that infrastructural development of Chittagong port like other ports in the neighbouring countries is pre-requisite in this regard.
Association leader Janu Mia chaired the rally. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) ward councillor Aslam Hossain, labour leaders Golum Md Chowdhury, Rashid Ahmad Chowdhury, Selim Khan, Biplob Mazumder, Mohammad Mostak spoke at the rally.
Bashanta Utsab held
Chattagram Charushilpi Sammilan, a cultural organisation, organised a colourful programme to celebrate Bashanta Utsab (spring festival) on Friday.
The programme held at Chittagong Art College started with melodious tune of Pakhuaj played by Dhaka University teacher Tapan Sarker. Then Abhyudoy Sangeet Angan enthralled the audience with Tagore song.
Ekushey observed
Bangladesh Navy Paribar Kalyan Sangha, Chittagong unit organised a painting and essay competition at No 2 Sailors Colony marking the International Mother Language Day.
Around 350 students of the Sangha-run schools -- Nou Paribar Shishu Niketon 1 and 2 -- participated in the competition.
Sangha President Begum Shabnab Ahmed distributed prizes among the winners as the chief guest.
Syedpur Hasan-Shahinur Academy organised a discussion on Monday with a call for advancing the nation with the spirit of Amar Ekushey. Academy Principal Ferdous Ahmed chaired the meeting on its premise in Boalkhali upazila.
A cultural function was also held while students of the school published a wall magazine on the occasion. Global Scholar School and College held different programmes on the school premises. Students performed at a programme with the institute trustee board Chairman Professor Dr ANM Abdul Muktadir in the chair.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) High School organised a daylong solo painting exhibition of artist Shawkat Zahan at Patenga sea beach on February 21.

Workshop on photojournalism concludes
A multimedia photographic presentation was held at Alliance Francaise auditorium on the concluding day of a 22-day photojournalism workshop here on Sunday.
Photobank Gallery, a photo agency, organised the workshop on the institute premises under the auspices of Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The workshop titled “International Photo Reportage 2010 in Bangladesh ” was organised in collaboration with Oslo University College (OUC) of Norway , Pathshala, South Asian Institute of Photography, Dhaka and Photobank, Chittagong .
Poet and Columnist Abul Momen, also the resident editor of the Prothom Alo in Chittagong, inaugurated the presentation as the chief guest where Samuel Barthet, director of Alliance Franchaise de Chittagong was the special guest.
