Selim Al Deen death anniversary observed at JU
The second death anniversary of 'Natyacharya' Selim Al Deen was observed at the Jahangirnagar University campus on January 14 with a daylong programme. The Department of Drama and Dramatics, JU organised the programme, which was attended by renowned theatre and cultural personalities from Dhaka.
The programme started early in the morning with a procession that started from the Dramatics Department towards Al Deen's grave. Begumzadi Meherunnesa, widow of Al Deen, led the procession.
In honour of the theatre icon, 'Acharya Selim Al Deen Seminar Library' was inaugurated as part of the programme. Professor Sharif Enamul Kabir, Vice Chancellor of JU, inaugurated the library. Among others, theatre personality Nasiruddin Yousuff and Begumzadi Meherunnesa were present at the inaugural.
A photography exhibition featuring the life and works of Al Deen was also part of the programme. The exhibition, featuring works of Barin Ghosh, was held at the Old Arts Faculty Building premises.
Present and former students of the department as well as the teachers took part in a musical soiree held at the Dramatics Department. The soiree featured songs from Al Deen's plays.
Chanu Bayati and his troupe from Manikganj performed 'Gazir Gaan' in the afternoon in front of the Old Arts Faculty Building.
In the evening, Al Deen's acclaimed play "Prachya' was staged at the Mukto Mancho (open stage). Directed by Dr. Yousuf Hasan, the play was staged by the students of the department.
Today, a daylong programme by Al Deen's troupe, Dhaka Theatre, will be held at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). The daylong programme will feature a lecture and play. Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury will deliver the Selim Al Deen Memorial Lecture at the Conference Hall of BSA, while Dhaka Theatre's latest production "Dhaboman" --written by Al Deen -- will be staged in the evening at the National Theatre Hall.
