PM to receive Indira Gandhi peace award tomorrow
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is to receive the prestigious Indira Gandhi Peace Prize during a glittering function at the presidential palace in Delhi tomorrow.
Indian President Pratibha Patil will award Hasina the prize in recognition of her contribution to peace and democracy.
Past recipients of the award include former US President Jimmy Carter, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Namibia's independence movement hero Sam Nujoma.
The award was introduced by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust in 1986, two years after the Indian prime minister was assassinated.
Nobel Laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus was the twelfth recipient of the award in 1998.
Other recipients include former Mauritian President Shridath Ramphal, late Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, former Irish President Mary Robinson, renowned Indian agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan and the organisation UNICEF.
The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development seeks to recognise the efforts of individuals or organisations to promote international peace, development and a new international economic order.
The prize carries a cash award of 25 lakh Indian rupees and a citation.
