Remembering Naren Biswas
Artistic orator Professor Naren Biswas' 63rd birth anniversary was observed at Cafe Theatre of Liberation War Museum on November 16. Anjali Biswas, wife of Naren Biswas, lit candles in observance of the anniversary.
Presided over by renowned educationist Professor Anisuzzaman, the programme also saw the participation of other noted personalities like Professor Nurur Rahman Khan, chairman, Bangla Department of Dhaka University; Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq; Professor Prafulla Roy; Professor Narayan Chandra Biswas; Joint Registrar of Kolkata University Nitish Biswas and drama personality Mamunur Rashid.
Professor Narayan Chandra Biswas elaborated on the life and works of Naren Biswas. To quote him, "Naren Biswas will be remembered forever for his sincere contribution to the Bangla language and literature. His unique efforts in compiling 'Bangla Uchcharon Abhidhan' and 11 volumes of audio cassettes 'Aitijhyer Angikar' that earned him the Ananda Purashkar are really marvellous."
In his speech, Mamunur Rashid highlighted Naren Biswas' roles in the Liberation War and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. He also stated that such was the spirited and unwavering personality of Naren Biswas that he never gave in to anything.
In his speech Professor Anisuzzaman said, "Naren Biswas, having an inquisitive mind, was always in search of new and novel ideas. His relentless reading led him to visual impairment."
Professor Naren Biswas wrote poems, lyrics, plays and literary criticism. He was a theatre activist as well. Plays written by Naren Biswas are "Nihoto Kushilob", "Roudradin", "Crossbiddho Jishu", "Tamoshir Phashi", "Shakuntala" (an adaptation of the Kalidas original) and "Maa" (adaptation of Maxim Gorky's "Mother"). According to his last will, his body was donated to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Anjali Biswas handed over Naren Biswas' collection of rare photographs on genocide during the Liberation War, memoirs and certificates to Mofidul Haq, member secretary and trustee of the Liberation War Museum.
Noted recitor Mahidul Islam recited a poem written by Shamsur Rahman, "Naren Biswas Ke Mon-e Rekhey" and an excerpt from the National Poet's "Jadi Aar Banshi Na Bajey".
Artistes of 'Shabdarup', Shameer Ranjan Sarkar and Shahriar Kabir, rendered songs written by Naren Biswas on the occasion.
