Hena made Brac ombudsperson
Former chief election commissioner Mohammad Abu Hena has joined Brac as the second ombudsperson, says a press release. Hena was appointed to the post for a three-year term by the Brac governing body following the completion of the term of his predecessor Manzoorul Karim. Brac is one of the world's largest NGOs. Born in 1937 in Rajbari, Hena completed his MA in English Language and Literature in 1959 from Dhaka University. He started his career as a college lecturer and later taught at Dhaka University. He joined the civil service in 1963. He was ambassador of Bangladesh to Japan and the Philippines. Hena was appointed Chief Election Commissioner in 1996 after his retirement. Brac is the first NGO and the only organisation in the country to have established an office of the ombudsperson. The ombudsperson's office has a comprehensive mandate to investigate any allegation of misadministration and misuse of power within Brac and against Brac from a third party. This includes grievances, such as corruption, abuse of power or negligence, oppression, nepotism, unfairness and discrimination, especially in the context of gender. The office of the ombudsperson is completely separate from Brac and its reports and recommendations are sent directly to the Brac Board for action.
