Marseille look for a win
Fallen French giants Marseille continue their bid to shed their dire home record when they host Lorient for a must-win league clash this Saturday.
Marseille, the 1993 European Cup winners, psyched themselves up enough to beat Liverpool in the Champions League last month - but when it comes to winning in France, especially at home, they have been at a loss.
Belgian Eric Gerets arrived at the club last month in the wake of Albert Emon's latest shunting aside by the club - having been at the helm several times before - as Marseille's domestic form went from bad to worse.
Since the Belgian's arrival Marseille have rocked the Reds at Anfield and on Tuesday Djibril Cisse helped them battle past a spirited Metz side to book their quarter-final place in the French League Cup.
But with only two league wins so far, one at home, Marseille need to quickly salvage a sinking campaign which has left them third from bottom after 12 games.
For right-sided defender Laurent Bonnart, Lorient's reputation for a more open style of play - compared to Metz's defence-oriented tactics in midweek - could provide the launch pad for a turnaround.
"I'm not saying it will be easy but Lorient play more open (than Metz) so that gives us more space and more opportunities to go on the attack," said Bonnart.
Lorient barely have a better victory record than Marseille. Three wins from their tally of matches has left them in 12th place, 14 points behind leaders Lyon.
The Britanny side would be content with a draw on Saturday, especially as they will be without knee ligament injury victim Hamed Namouchi, and fellow striker Marama Vahirua, who has a less serious knee injury.
Lorient coach Christian Gourcuff still believes Marseille could be there for the taking, especially as they won the corresponding fixture 1-0 last year.
Paris St Germain also only have two wins to their name although the return to form of Portuguese striker Pauleta has given PSG coach Paul Le Guen cause for hope.
Pauleta scored both PSG's goals in their 2-0 League Cup defeat of Montpellier on Wednesday - his 100th and 101st for the club in all competitions - and has now surpassed former PSG hero Dominique Rocheteau.
While Lyon eye an easy three points when they host Valenciennes, and second placed Nancy battle it out with in-form Bordeaux, PSG have a tricky encounter away to Strasbourg.
And, former France international Rocheteau has reminded his former club that it's titles, not records that count most.
"I'm honoured that it was Pauleta who beat my record - even though I only found out years later that I had scored 100 goals for PSG!" Rocheteau told Le Parisien.Fixtures
