Low tide is when Mangali gets right to work! Once the water level of the Shoilmari river falls in Khulna’s Batiaghata upazila, she makes her way to the mudflats and spends hours catching snakehead murrel fish, locally known as “dogri maachh”. Each time, she comes back with a haul of 2-3kgs and heads to the local fish market where she sells them for Tk 200-220 per kg. Many women of the area, especially those from low-income families, wait for the low tide for this opportunity to earn some money and contribute to their homes. The photo was taken recently. The road in front of the BNP head office in the capital’s Nayapaltan was both gridlocked and waterlogged after just an hour of rain yesterday afternoon. When it rains in Dhaka, many areas often go under water due to poor drainage systems and severe plastic pollution. Photo: Amran Hossain
