A clay take on accessories
What started off as a fun way to spend time with her son at a fair in Kuala Lampur, for Masheed Ahmad, took a surprise turn when everyone started applauding her for the earrings she had made from polymer clay.
"I was instantaneously hooked onto the idea of using polymer clay to make trinkets when I realised people liked my designs," said Masheed Ahmad, "and the only experience I had with jewellery since then was a long-standing fascination and commitment to wearing earrings on a daily basis," she adds.
Available both in Malaysia and Bangladesh, Whimsy by Masheed is the next jewellery line to look out for this year. The line comprises of simple, understated colourful pieces in different hues – all made from polymer clay and perfect for work or a weekend hangout with friends for the youthful adult or even a rebellious teenager. Keeping the target audience in mind, the price of each trinket is very reasonable and not more than Tk 500 to Tk 800.
According to Masheed Ahmad, her designs encompass a fresh, youthful, vibrant feel, straying away from the classic and traditional jewellery take that we often see day in and out. The line is playful and jovial; perfectly complementing casual to semi-formal wear and the touch of colour makes them this season's must haves.
As the name suggests, most of her designs are abstract, bird motifs, marbled effects of colours or inspired by nature and include not only earrings, but rings and pendants and even nose pins too! Tassels have made a comeback this year, and Masheed Ahmad uses them as a part of her designs alongside charms as well. When asked about how she comes up with the designs and what colour combinations to use, she said, "I think about what others would want to wear and consider current trends as well."
Since the designs are not too over the top, they can be paired with traditional to western outfits. Nothing sounds better than pairing one of her pendants or earrings with a simple white kurti or monochrome top this summer to make you feel a tad less sad about going back to classes, exams, assignments, presentations and deadlines.
