Know your deshi ‘superfoods’: Horitoki
The dried ripe fruits of the "horitoki" tree, also known as chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula), have been used as an integral part of the subcontinent's traditional medicine for ages.
The medium to large tree is native to South Asia, southwest China, Malaysia and Vietnam.
It is one of the main ingredients of the popular Ayurvedic formulation "Triphala".
Horitoki is used as a bowel regulator and digestive aid. It is a mild laxative. Its powder is often used in treating chronic diarrhoea.
It can provide relief to patients of piles and constipation. Its consumption may increase appetite.
It is considered as a promoter of memory and it can also promote eyesight. It may regulate breathing in patients with asthma.
Its consumption lowers blood sugar levels and is helpful for diabetes patients. Horitoki may also help treat jaundice.
Its consumption can give relief to people with heart diseases. It may be used to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
Horitoki works well as a mouthwash and may help with dental caries, bleeding gums and mouth ulcers.
Its paste when applied is found to be anti-inflammatory, and having purifying and healing capacity for wounds.
Gargling with it may provide comfort to a sore throat.
Its application may cure skin diseases, including effects of allergies on skin.
However, not much study has been done on the effects of horitoki on human health. It cannot be used instead of seeking medical help for the ailments and symptoms mentioned above. Too much of its use is also not recommended.
