Man returns to world of crime after 23yrs in jail
After his 22-year sentence for murder ended, Rafiqul Islam was released in 2017.
But in 2019, he was arrested again in an arms case filed with Lalbagh Police Station in the capital and was sent to jail for a year.
Rafiqul, who goes by the alias Ratan, spent 23 years of his 45-year life behind bars. However, while investigating an incident of gun violence that took place earlier this month, the Detective Branch of police again arrested Ratan in Savar on Wednesday, said AKM Hafiz Akhtar, additional commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police
Police recovered a pistol with a magazine, a revolver, two bullets and a motorcycle from Ratan and his associate Arman's possession.
At a press briefing at DMP's media centre, Hafiz Akhtar yesterday said Ratan and dozens of his accomplices went to a disputed land in the capital's Hazaribagh area on June 4 and fired three bullets at a man who claims to be the owner of the land.
They were hired by Abdul Hashem, the other man who claims ownership of the land, said the officer.
"In primary interrogation, Ratan and Arman admitted that they took part in the attack," he added.
Police have arrested Hashem and are looking for the others accused in a case filed with Hazaribagh Police Station over the incident.
Officials said Ratan was wanted in at least 25 separate cases.
Saiful Islam, additional deputy commissioner (Mirpur zone) of DB, said in 1996, Ratan hurled a bomb at a procession in Hazaribagh and killed a man named Sanu. Ratan was arrested and convicted.
Soon after he got released, Ratan got involved in extortion and other criminal activities and got arrested by Lalbagh police in an arms case, he added.
Saiful said Ratan got married in 2018 and has two children.
