An elderly freedom fighter, who was injured in an attack allegedly by the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Bhara-Simla village in Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday midnight, died at upazila health complex on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Alauddin Khokon, 65, of Bhara-Simulia village in the upazila.
Officer in-charge of Kaliganj police station Ali Azam Khan said a gang attacked Alauddin Tuesday midnight and stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons while he was sleeping on the verandah of his house.
Later the gang dumped him in a nearby ditch thinking that Alauddin had died in the attack.
Critically injured Alauudin was rushed to Kaliganj health complex where he died at about 7:30 am.
Assistant police super intendent Laskar Tajul Islam (Debhata-Kaliganj circle) said they suspect that Jamaat-Shibir men hacked Alauddin to death.
Police are trying to arrest the accused, said Laskar Tajul Islam.
Kaliganj upazila AL president and former FF commandar also said that Alauddin was killed by Jamaat-Shibir men 'in a planned way'.
Contacted, Satkhira district Jamaat publicity secretary Azizur Rahman denied the allegation.
