Producers, Star Cineplex resolve long-standing revenue dispute
After months of friction over alleged hidden charges and imbalanced ticket revenue distribution, film producers and Star Cineplex have finally reached a consensus, putting an end to a long-standing standoff that had cast a shadow over local film screenings.
The breakthrough came during a meeting held Thursday (May 22) afternoon at Star Cineplex's Bashundhara City branch, where both parties agreed on a revised revenue-sharing model. While the exact financial terms remain undisclosed, the agreement is being hailed as a significant move towards greater transparency and collaboration in the country's film exhibition sector.

The resolution follows a Prothom Alo report published on May 14, titled "Unfair bills in the name of AC maintenance", which intensified scrutiny over the billing practices of exhibitors and reignited calls from producers for equitable profit-sharing.
"We sat down and sorted it out," said Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Senior Manager (Marketing) at Star Cineplex. "The issue has been resolved."
Producers have long raised concerns over not receiving their rightful share of ticket sales. Thursday's meeting marked the first formal negotiation between both parties in months, offering renewed hope for a more sustainable industry.
In attendance were Star Cineplex Executive Director Khaled Ahmed and producers Shahriar Shakil, Redoan Rony, Shahreen Sumi (producer of "Borbaad"), Zahid Hasan (producer of "Jongli"), and Abul Kalam (producer of "Insaaf").
Following the meeting, "Toofan" and "Daagi" producer Shahriar Shakil shared a group photo on Facebook, writing, "For the betterment of Bangla cinema, producers and Star Cineplex have reached a consensus based on fairness and will move forward with upcoming film screenings accordingly."
He expressed hope that the resolution would "play a positive role in advancing the industry."
