Adnan Al Rajeev directorial short film 'Ali' set to premiere at Cannes today
Bangladesh is proudly being represented at the 78th Cannes Film Festival with the short film "Ali", directed by Adnan Al Rajeev. The film is scheduled to be screened today, with each short film at the festival typically receiving two screenings on the same day.
Speaking from Cannes on Thursday (May 22), Rajeev informed Prothom Alo that he attended the technical screening of "Ali"—a routine process to ensure the final sound, colour, and overall projection quality of the shortlisted films. Reflecting on the competition, Rajeev noted, "As expected, the nominated short films at Cannes are incredibly powerful in terms of storytelling, direction, and presentation."

He hopes to learn from the reactions of international critics, directors, and producers, and to use the experience to grow further as a filmmaker.
"I've always believed that when you speak the truth, people can feel it—no matter who they are," Rajeev added. "I will face them as a filmmaker, with my story, in my own language. I'm not afraid, because I know this is my truth."
The teaser for "Ali", released last week, has already received considerable praise. Viewers have been intrigued by the dynamic between the protagonist and his mother, sparking questions and discussion. "People are wondering whether there's a conflict between them. I'm really enjoying these responses," said Rajeev.
This marks the first time a Bangladeshi film is competing in the short film section of the Cannes Film Festival.
According to the festival's official site, "Ali" tells the story of a coastal town where women are forbidden to sing. A teenage boy from the town defies the norm by entering a singing competition, hoping to leave for the city—yet his act of singing holds a deeper mystery. The titular role is played by Al Amin.
