The long-awaited casting reveal for the upcoming "Harry Potter" television series is finally here. After months of rumours and fan theories swirling around the internet, the studio has officially confirmed the first six names of those who will portray key adult characters in the Wizarding World reboot.

Leading the lineup is veteran actor John Lithgow, who takes on the pivotal role of Albus Dumbledore, following the footsteps of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who portrayed the Hogwarts headmaster in the film franchise. Lithgow, who turns 80 this year, told ScreenRant, "Well, it came as a total surprise to me... it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid." He added, "But I'm very excited... I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes."

Janet McTeer has been cast as Minerva McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu steps into the iconic role of Severus Snape, immortalised on screen by the late Alan Rickman. Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid, a role previously brought to life by the late Robbie Coltrane (credited as Anthony Robert McMillan). Frost had repeatedly dismissed the rumours of his involvement until the official announcement confirmed the casting.

Also joining the ensemble are Luke Thallon, set to appear in a recurring role as the nervous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse, who will portray the cantankerous Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.

The official announcement was shared yesterday by the production team. In a joint statement, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said, "We're delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can't wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life."

While fans are celebrating the casting of these seasoned actors, the biggest mystery remains: who will play Harry, Ron, and Hermione? Those names are yet to be revealed, keeping anticipation high.

The new HBO series will be a faithful adaptation of JK Rowling's original seven-book saga, with the first season expected to air in 2026. The project aims to reimagine the franchise with a fresh perspective, giving each season the room to delve deeply into the material that shaped a generation.
