Editor cleared, jt editor fined
The High Court today exempted Bangla daily Prothom Alo's editor Matiur Rahman of contempt charges but fined the newspaper's joint editor Mizanur Rahman Tk 5,000 for writing an article on anticipatory bail.
The article headlined 'Minute-e Ekti Agam Jamin Kibhabe' (how is it possible to grant an anticipatory bail every minute) was published on February 28.
The court observed that Mizanur has "committed gross contempt of court" by writing the article.
The HC bench of Justice Naima Haidar and Justice Jafar Ahmed passed the order.
The court issued the contempt rule on March 2 in a suo moto move after some lawyers, including barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud and barrister Rafique-Ul Huq, had drawn the judges' attention to the article by Mizanur.
In line with the court order, both the editors appeared before the court on Tuesday and made statements clarifying their positions on the article.
