Vermicompost making brings him solvency
Once a landless farmer, Nazrul Islam has gained solvency by selling vermicompost fertiliser prepared at his Modhupur village home in Sarpukur union of Aditmari upazila under the district.
"Starting the work in 2010, I earned Tk 55 thousand by selling vermicompost to the villagers that year. The earning rose to Tk 1.32 lakh in 2011, Tk 2.10 lakh in 2012, Tk 2.55 lakh in 2013, and Tk 2.90 lakh in 2014. I hope to earn Tk 3.50 lakh this year," Nazrul said.
“Vermicompost has a high demand among the local farmers as it is better than chemical fertilisers. Many people offer advance payment to get the item from me but I cannot meet the demand of all of them,” he said.
He sells a bag containing 50 kg of vermicompost at Tk 420 while the production cost stands at Tk 180 to 220.
"We collect wastes of plants and trees and buy cow dung from the village farmers. Kept in a big earthen hole, these items rot in 20 to 25 days. It is used as feed for earthworms, and finally vermicompost is made from the earthworms' dung," said Nazrul's wife Sabina Begum.
Now their four-member family are leading a happy life, living on their own land that was bought with the money earned from selling vermicompost.
Mansur Ali of Modhupur village said they get good yield of crops especially vegetables by using vermicompost.
“I and many other farmers at Modhupur village are now using vermicompost, buying the quality fertiliser from Nazrul Islam,” said Delowar Rahman, another farmer at the same village.
Nazrul gives suggestion to local farmers about the process of making the natural fertiliser.
