Speech-impaired woman raped in Nilphamari; accused arrested

Police today arrested a man on charge of raping his neighbour, a speech-impaired woman, in a village under Saidpur upazila in Nilphamari.

The accused Sekandar Ali, 45, is a resident of Kujipukur Adorsha village under the same upazila and a small trader by profession, reports our local correspondent quoting Abul Hasnat, officer-in-charge (OC) of Saidpur Police Station.

Hasnat said the victim, aged around 40, was alone on February 11 when Sekandar forcibly took her to a nearby tomato field and raped her. The accused also threatened the victim with dire consequences if she told anyone about what had happened, the police official said.

After returning home, the victim shared the incident with her family members. Later, her brother filed a rape case accusing Sekandar Ali this morning.

Following the case, police arrested Sekandar from his residence, Hasnat added.
