Paddy processing on roads poses risk
Mindless use of public roads and highways for paddy processing during the ongoing harvesting season is disrupting vehicular movement in different areas of the district.
Threshing of paddy on roads isn’t new as farmers usually prefer to use public roads during the harvesting period every year, farmers said.
Farmer Sirajul I slam of Kalbhairab village in Kaliganj upazila said like him many farmers in the area use the road for processing paddy during the harvesting period.
“Usually we do this in the morning when there are not many vehicles ply the road,” he said.
“We use the road for paddy processing as there are not many vehicles use the rural roads daily,” farmer Nazrul Islam of Daikhawa village in Hatibandha upazila said.
“We have been using the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway for long as many farmers, especially the marginal ones, hardly have any space for the purpose,” farmer Didarul Islam of Ratherpar village in Aditmari upazila said.
“Due to paddy processing I face serious trouble in at least 30 places while driving my vehicle on Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway road. Drivers have to remain more cautious in running their vehicles to avoid accidents,” trucker Abul Kalam said.
Sahedul Islam, 42, a driver from Hatibandha upazila, said he faces huge trouble while driving the vehicle on Lalmonirhat-Hatibandha road.
Pulin Chandra Roy, president of District Transport Workers Union in Lalmonirhat, said around 1,500 trucks and buses ply different roads of the district daily.
