MP Rana denied bail again
Awami League lawmaker from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency Amanur Rahman Khan Rana was again denied bail in the freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
Judge of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court Maksuda Khanom passed the order yesterday in a crowded courtroom, said Court Inspector Anwarul Islam.
Earlier, two more witnesses of the case -- ward councillor Shafiqul Islam Shamim and Sanwar Hossain Suruj -- gave their statements to the court. Rana's lawyers conducted the cross examinations.
The judge fixed October 18 for hearing of other witnesses of the case, he said.
Rana had earlier been denied bail on several occasions, both by this court and also higher courts.
Seeking bail, Rana's lawyer Mohammad Ali, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, told the court that Rana is an elected lawmaker and he has been living in jail for over two years in connection with the case.
As the national parliament election is ahead, they wanted bail for the lawmaker and he would not jump bail, he said.
Opposing the bail, Additional Public Prosecutor Monirul Islam told the court that two of the accused and three of the witnesses had given statements to the court previously and it was revealed in their statements that the lawmaker was involved in the murder.
The case is now under trial, and if the lawmaker gets bail in the case at this stage, he could influence the witnesses, he said.
The bullet-hit body of district AL leader Faruk was found near his College Para house in Tangail town on January 18 in 2013.
Faruk's wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case with Tangail Police Station three days later, accusing unidentified criminals.
Police initially investigated the case, which was later shifted to Tangail Detective Branch of police.
The charge-sheet in the case was submitted on February 3 last year.
Four of the 14 accused, including Rana, are in jail while three are on bail. Seven others, including three younger brothers of Rana, are still on the run.
Charges were framed against the accused in September last year.
