AL man killed in rivals’ attack
A union level Awami League (AL) activist was stabbed to death and two others sustained serious injuries in an attack allegedly by their rival group over establishing supremacy in the locality in Kushtia Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased, Azim Uddin Mondol, 55, a resident of Madhpur village, was an activist of Ujangram union unit AL.
Quoting the villagers, police said there had been a longstanding rivalry between two factions of the union unit AL, one led by Abu Bakar Siddique, general secretary of the union unit AL, and other by Abdul Jalil, former member of Ujangram union parishad (UP).
As a sequel, a group loyal to Abu Bakar attacked Jalil’s nephew Azim with sharp weapons around 8:30am and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured, Officer in Charge (OC) of Islamic University Police Station Jahangir Alam quoted locals as saying.
The goons also beat up Jalil’s younger brother Jalal Mondol, 43, and Motiar Rahman, 47, when they tried to save Azim from the attackers, the OC added.
Locals rescued Azim and took him to Kushtia General Hospital where he died around 10:30am, OC Jahangir said.
On information, police rushed to the village and detained Abu Bakar for his alleged involvement in the clash.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further clash as a tense situation is prevailing among the supporters of the two factions.
