12 cops, 50 BNP men injured during clash in Naogaon
At least 40-50 BNP leaders and activists and 12 policemen were injured in a clash between the party men and police in Naogaon today.
The incident took place in front of the BNP party office at Naogaon KD intersection around 12:30pm, reports our Natore correspondent.
Witnesses said Naogaon district BNP brought out a protest procession in front of the party office as part of its central program protesting the alleged killings and disappearances across the country.
At the time, some policemen obstructed the procession and asked them to leave the party office.
The BNP leaders and activists got angry and started throwing brick chips at the policemen.
During this time, chases and counter-chases took place between police and BNP leaders and activists, witnesses said.
BNP leaders and activists vandalised several shops and cars during the clash.
Police fired shots and tear gas to control the situation, added witnesses.
Talking to reporters, district Jubo Dal president Biojid Hossain Palash said police barricaded their peaceful protest procession and attacked leaders and activists, injuring at least 40-50 party men.
They are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital and various clinics.
Abdul Mannan Miah, superintendent of Naogaon police, said BNP leaders and activists attacked the police without any provocation, leaving 12 policemen injured.
Of the injured, at least seven policemen were admitted to hospital for treatment while policemen were given first aid.
Those involved in the incident have been identified and legal action is being taken against them, the SP added.
