A ruling Awami League activist was hacked to death and three others including a union parishad member were injured in an attack at Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah last night.

Deceased Ohidul Islam, 30, son of Golap Sheikh of Dulalmundia village in the upazila, was the cultural affairs secretary of Swechhasebak League’s Kaliganj unit, reports our local correspondent.

Five to seven miscreants swooped on Ohidul and others with sharp weapons when local UP Chairman Ali Hossain alias Apu was conducting village arbitration over a trivial matter at Dulalmundia bazaar around 9:30pm, said Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.

Ohidul succumbed to his injuries around 2:00am while undergoing treatment at Jessore Medical College Hospital, the police official said.

The injured UP member Ismail Hossain was admitted to the same hospital while two others -- Jalaluddin and Didar Hossain – were undergoing treatment at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, the OC said.

Police, however, detained two persons in this connection. Additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident.
