18 hurt in Gazipur hotel blast
At least 18 people suffered burn injuries in an explosion at a hotel in Gazipur early today.
Among them, 15 were sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting fire fighters.
The explosion took place on the ground floor of Tripty Hotel in Board Bazar area around 2:30am when the staffs were getting ready to close it, said Ershad Hossain, an official of local Fire Service and Civil defence.
On information, four firefighting units rushed to the spot and put out the blaze caused by the explosion, he said, adding that they are still not sure what caused the explosion.
“Due to the explosion, several establishments including Radhuni Hotel and Restaurant, adjacent to the Tripty hotel, were badly damaged”, Ershad said.
Rezaul Karim and Habibur Rahman, owners of the Tripty Hotel and Radhuni Restaurant respectively, said they are confirmed that the explosion was not because of the gas cylinder blast as the cylinders of their hotels are still intact.
The explosion might have taken place due to a blast in the underground sewerage pipe, the fire officials said.
Meanwhile, a five-member probe body headed by an additional magistrate has been formed to investigate the incident and asked to submit its report within seven working days.
The extent of damage due to the fire could not be known immediately.
