6 die after ‘taking spirit’ in Noakhali

Six persons died after “taking spirit” in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali today.

The deceased were identified as Mohin Uddin, 40, Nur Nabi Manik, 50, Rabi Lal Roy, 57, Abdul Khalek, 72 and Sabuj, 60, Liton, 55, hailing from different villages in the upazila, reports our Noakhali correspondent quoting police.

Five other persons were also admitted to different hospitals in critical condition, police said.

Meanwhile, family members buried three of the victims hurriedly and also refused to make any comment over the deaths, said Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Companyganj Police Station.

Contacted, the OC said they received information from different sources that six people died after consuming spirit, which they bought from a homeopathy shop.

Police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies of Nur Nabi and Rabi Lal Roy for autopsy at Noakhali General Hospital.  

The reasons behind their deaths could be known only after getting the autopsy report, added the OC.

Meanwhile, police detained the shopkeeper Syed jahidul Islam and his son Priyom for interrogation.
