Govt mulling independent prosecution

• Salaries of PP, APP to be hiked
• No comment on magistrate-run mobile courts

Bangladesh government is considering giving independence to the state prosecution service.

The government is principally in favour of the independence, Law Minister Anisul Huq told reporters after meeting district heads on the third day of the deputy commissioners’ conference.

It will be implemented in phases and the appointments to be given in this regard are being considered to be handed over to Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission, the minister said.

On a different note, the minister said the salaries of public prosecutors and additional public prosecutors will be hiked soon, without specifying any further.

The minister, however, denied commenting on the demands for executive magistrate-run mobile courts, which has been declared illegal by a higher court. The ban is currently at a halt.

The deputy commissioners who attended the meeting with law ministry today reiterated their demand for restoration of the mobile court provision.

“I cannot comment on this issue as the matter is currently with Supreme Court,” Minister Anisul said.
