4 army men among dead in landslides: ISPR

Four army men including two officers have been killed in a landslide in Rangamati, said Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR).

Besides, 10 army men were also injured in the incident while another remained missing, ISPR told The Daily Star.

The Daily Star has so far ascertained identities of Maj Mahfuz and Captain Tanvir among the victims of an army camp in Manikchhari area that collapsed following the heavy rain.

Our Rangamati correspondent quoted district Civil Surgeon Dr Shahid Talukder to ascertain the deaths of two army officers in the region.

Meanwhile, Rezaul Karim, assistant director of ISPR, confirmed The Daily Star of casualties caused in the landslide and said two officers were among them.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Md Manzurul Mannan said that the army men were engaged in rescue works on Rangamati-Manikchhari road when another slide buried them.

Expressing shock at the incident, he said Bangladesh Army, Fire Service and Civil Defence, and police officials were jointly conducting rescue operation across the district.

The toll from landslide climbed up to 133 and it may rise further.
