3 female ‘Jamaat leaders’ held in Rajshahi

Police today claimed to have arrested three leaders of women and student fronts of Jamaat-e Islami in three upazilas of Rajshahi for their alleged involvement in radical Islamist activities.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the law enforcers of Puthia Police Station arrested Bulbuli Begum alias Irin, 32, wife of Mizanur Rahman of Dighalkandi area in Puthia upazila on Monday morning, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.

Irin, an English teacher of Dighalkandi High School and also coordinator of the district unit of Islami Chhatri Shangstha, a front body of Jamaat-e-Islami, named her mentor in police interrogation.

Following her statement, police arrested Fatema Khatun, 50, wife of Nurul Islam of Mohishalbari of Godagari upazila on Monday night.

Later, police arrested Raihatun-nesa alias Nipa, 20, daughter of Jomshed Ali of Holidagachhi Jaigirpara in Charghat upazila today.

Nipa was accused in a case filed under the Special Power Act of 1974 with Charghat Police Station for engaging into radicalism under cover of inviting people for Islam and creating possibilities of anarchy among children, their guardians and local people.

The two others were accused in the case for subversive activities of January 2015 of Baneswar in Puthia Police Station.

Police officials said they are yet to complete investigation against the two.
