Protect Khan Jahan Ali Dighi: HC
The High Court yesterday directed the government to immediately take necessary steps to protect historic Khan Jahan Ali Dighi, a large pond in Bagerhat.
In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a ban on changing the size and shape of the Dighi through earth filling for six months, as local influential people -- Zakir Hossain Mridha, Shekh Maruf Hossain and Kazi Mahbubur Rahman -- allegedly started filling the water body in their own interest.
The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government and the trio to explain as to why their failure to protect, recover and maintain the Dighi should not be declared illegal and against public interest.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) filed the writ petition.
