Road accidents kill 10, injure 15
At least 10 were killed and 15 injured in road accidents across the country yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Sylhet, a man was killed and 12 were injured after a collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a human haulier in Pargana Bazar area in Sylhet Sadar upazila.
The deceased is Sohel Miah, 26.
Police, quoting locals, said Sohel and his friends were going on a trip to Jaflong via the auto-rickshaw. The accident left 13 people injured initially.
Later, Sohel died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, minutes after locals took him there. Both the vehicles were seized and the injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
In Dhaka, a woman was killed when a speeding truck hit her at Dhulivita in Dhamrai upazila.
The deceased is Fatema Begum, 42.
Quoting locals, police said the accident took place around 10am while Fatima was crossing the road, killing her on the spot.
Police later went to the spot and recovered the body. The truck was seized but its driver and helper managed to flee. A case was filed in this connection, they added.
In Jamalpur, a rickshaw-van puller was killed when a Leguna (human haulier) hit his van at Kazirakh intersection in Jamalpur town.
The deceased is Hashu, 50.
The accident took place around 9:30am, leaving him severely injured, police said.
Police rushed Hashu to Jamalpur General Hospital and was later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they added.
Police seized the Laguna but its driver fled the scene.
In Chattogram, a rickshaw-puller was killed after a truck hit his vehicle at Patiya Bus Stand in Patiya upazila.
The deceased is Abu Samad, 40.
Police, quoting locals, said the accident happened around 2am and left Samad critically injured.
He was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 5am, they added.
The trucker fled the scene with the vehicle, and police are trying to catch him.
In Gaibandha, a fish trader was killed when a speeding bus ran him over at Fasitola in Gobindaganj upazila.
The deceased is Hariram Sarker, 38.
Police, quoting locals, said when Hariram reached Fasitola, a speeding bus of Nabil Paribahan hit him from behind. After he fell down, the bus ran him over, killing him on the spot, said police.
The bus driver fled soon after the incident. Police recovered the body and sent it to Gaibandha District Hospital for autopsy.
In Kurigram, two people were killed and two injured when their motorbikes collided in Hasnabad union of Nageshwari upazila.
The deceased are Jahedul Islam, 35, and Alomgir Hossain, 35. The injured are Yousuf Ali, 28, and Bulbul Ahmed, 30.
Police said the two riders, Jahedul and Alomgir, died on the spot. The pillion passengers were severely injured.
Locals took them to Kurigram General Hospital. Bulbul was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
In Gazipur, two people were killed and one was injured when a truck collided with a battery-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka bypass road in Meghdubi area.
The deceased are Mofizul Islam, 47, and his son Aziz, 17. The auto-rickshaw driver was injured.
Police, quoting locals, said Mofizul died on the spot. Locals rushed Aziz and the auto-rickshaw driver to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. Aziz was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but he died on the way there.
The van driver fled the scene with the vehicle.
In Munshiganj, a man died when a bus hit him in Bhaterchar Natun Rasta area of Gazaria upazila.
The deceased is Anowar Hossain, 42. He was a staffer at a local health complex.
Anowar was returning home with his wife on a bus. After getting off, another bus hit him and fled around 5pm, killing him on the spot.
Police said Anowar’s body is being kept at Bhaberchar Highway Police Outpost and will be handed over to his family. They are trying to catch the bus.
