Manju, Nasir continue campaigns

Quader dismisses need for army in polls
Manju

Immediate past Chittagong city mayor M Manjur Alam yesterday sought reelection to continue the development works he initiated in his last tenure, while a central Awami League leader campaigning for party favourite AZM Nasir Uddin criticised Manju as a complete failure.
On a campaign trail, BNP leader Manju said, "With transparency and accountability, I ran Chittagong City Corporation and tried to develop all wards equally."
He added, "To serve the people, I am running for mayorship again. I will finish the incomplete works of the city if I get your blessings and cooperation."
However, AL publicity secretary Hasan Mahmud urged the electorate to save Chittagong from the hands of Manju, who he said "totally failed" as mayor in the last five years.
"If he becomes mayor again, the high-lying areas like Andarkilla will go under water this time," Hasan said, referring to the city's chronic waterlogging.

'RESIST KHALEDA'
Separately, Hasan told a discussion that the people would resist BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia if she came to the port city to seek votes for party-backed candidates. She held the people hostage in the last three months of movement when innocent people were killed in firebombing, and the people will give her a reply, he said.
AL's Chittagong south district unit organised the discussion at party office marking Mujibnagar Day.
There were speculations that Khaleda might visit Chittagong to campaign for Manju.

'NO NEED FOR ARMY'
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday told journalists in Chittagong city that the April 28 city elections would be held peacefully without the deployment of army.
The government will give all logistic support to the Election Commission to help conduct a free, fair and transparent vote, he said at Chittagong Press Club.
The AL leader also said the use of money in election beyond the legal limit must be stopped so as to encourage honest people to seek candidacy. He added that the EC had not fully succeeded to stop it.
