'Go for skills, job will follow'
Proper education is a must for youths, said University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan yesterday.
Education on science and technology has become necessary nowadays as the world is going through a rapid change, he said.
The UGC chairman was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 21st International Conference on Computer and Information Technology at United International University (UIU) in Dhaka.
The UIU organised the three-day conference on its Badda campus, which will end tomorrow.
Prof Abdul Mannan said the position of Bangladesh's young population is fifth in the world. These youths will not only determine the future of the country but also shape the world, he said.
“You [the youth] have to be that much skilled and educated, so that you don't need to search for a job. Instead, the job will find you,” said Prof Mannan.
He also appreciated the initiative to organise such a conference, which is a big platform to share knowledge.
This is one of the largest IT conferences in Bangladesh aimed at enhancing the country's technological advancement.
Researchers and academics from home and abroad as well as students of different universities are parting in the conference, where 88 research papers prepared by various researchers from 21 countries -- including the US, Australia and India -- will be presented.
At the event, a total of 12 technical sessions on different scientific research topics -- such as machine intelligence, cloud computing, network systems and machine learning -- will be held.
Prof Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman, vice chancellor of UIU; Hasan Mahmood Raja, chairman of the UIU Board of Trustees; Prof Celia Shahnaz, chair of IEEE Bangladesh Section; Mohammad S Alam, a professor of Texas A&M University; Prof Hasnan Ahmed, pro-VC of UIU; and Prof Salekul Islam, head of CSE department of UIU; also spoke at the ceremony yesterday.
