Commission to identify conspirators to be declared soon: law minister
Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said a commission will be formed soon to unmask and ensure the punishment of those who plotted the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members.
“An official announcement regarding the commission will hopefully be made soon... and its activities will only be limited to identifying the conspirators of August 15,” he said.
He made the announcement at a discussion on “August: the month of mourning, month of conspiracy”, organised by Sampriti Bangladesh, a citizens’ platform promoting secularism, at Jatiya Press Club.
The minister said the commission would probably be headed by chief justice or the speaker of the parliament, and would be a very important institution.
He said anti-liberation forces’ intention to undermine the country’s independence by assassinating Bangabandhu failed due to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The killers knew that if Bangabandhu’s bloodline continues in Bangladesh, the country will not be misguided, and that is why he was assassinated along with his family members,” he said.
Anisul claimed that Sheikh Hasina has breathed a new life into the country, and is now working tirelessly to fulfill her father’s dream of building a “Sonar Bangla”.
Claiming that Ziaur Rahman was not a freedom fighter, he blamed an international conspiracy and termed former president Zia as one of the conspirators of the August 15, 1975 massacre.
“He [Zia] was involved in the conspiracy of Bangabandhu killing. As there is no way to bring charges against the dead according to law, he was left out,” the minister added.
He alleged that Zia had formed a cabinet with rewarding the Pakistan’s allies, who were against the country’s Liberation War.
In his speech, Maj Gen (retd) Mohammed Ali Shikder said Bangabandhu was killed to turn the country into Pakistan.
“After his assassination, the supremacy of Jamaat-BNP rose rapidly, and this group started torturing and killing minorities forcing them to leave their homeland,” he claimed.
With the platform’s convener Pijush Bandyopadhyay in the chair, the discussion was addressed, among others, by retired Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, State Minister for Information Dr Murad Hasan and former ambassador AKM Atiqur Rahman.
