15 hurt as robbers attack CU students
At least 15 students of Chittagong University were injured, one of them critically, in an attack allegedly carried out by a group of robbers while the students were visiting a dense forest near the campus yesterday.
Critically injured Anwar Hossain, a master’s student of the sociology department, was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital while the others received primary treatment from CU Medical Centre, said Tipu Sultan, on-duty doctor of the medical centre.
Md Hossain Rakib, one of the students, said seven robbers, armed with rifles and sharp weapons intercepted them on the way to Chalanda Giripath around 1pm.
The criminals fired blank shots to intimidate the group of 50 students, and hacked Anwar, he said. Some 14 students were beat up when they refused to give up belongings, he said, adding that the gang took 25 mobile phones and other belongings from students.
The students frequently visit the place, around three kilometres away from the campus, to enjoy its natural beauty, said campus sources.
The victims verbally informed the CU Proctor’s Office of the matter.
Police rushed to the spot and were trying to identify the criminals, said CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury. “We are looking into the matter,” he added.
