The road blockade was underway until last reported at 12:45pm.

Students of Home Economics College have been demanding the college to be declared as an institute of Dhaka University for some time now.

Recently they have been pressing the authorities to convert the institution to a co-education system – from the prevailing ‘girls only’ – to move forward with their demand.

Students said that they took to the streets to raise their demands to the government and take necessary steps to mitigate the problem.

Their demands also include ensuring its autonomy, providing transport and library facility, ensure quality of education, eradicate accommodation problem, appointing adequate teachers and ensuring sufficient classrooms.

Israt Jahan, a second year student of Child Development and Social Relationship department said, "Though Dhaka University conduct our admission test, they never take any responsibility of us. As we are deprived of various facilities, we want our college as an institute of DU."
