Abdul Aziz, 33, a diver, was manhandled by an additional secretary of a ministry, Mahmudul Hasan, a duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, told The Daily Star.

Two fire-fighting units went to Azimpur colony this afternoon to rescue a boy who slipped into deep waters of a pond in the colony, said Mahmudul Hasan.

The government official, who rushed to spot, charged at Aziz demanding that he too jump into the water to save the boy, said Hasan.  “He assaulted Aziz.”

The fire service rescued the boy, Rakibul Hasan, 11, from the water and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead around 4:00pm.
