15 'traffickers' held, 10 victims rescued
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained 15 alleged human traffickers including a lower tier staff of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in separate drives in the capital.
The elite force also rescued 10 victims who were allegedly gathered at a place for sending them to Malaysia and a migrant worker from Libya with the assistance of the Bangladesh embassy.
Rab-3 yesterday produced the arrestees and the rescued at a press briefing at its media centre in the capital's Karwan Bazar.
The alleged traffickers are Selimuzzaman, 41, Shahidul Islam, 47, Masum Ahmed, 36, Anwarul Azim, 38, Al Amin, 40, Amir Hossain, Kawsar Uddin, 39, Rashed Khan, 39, Raihan Khan, 30, Saiful Islam alias Alam, 33, Jahid Hossain alias Mainul, 34, ASM Mahmudul Hasan alias Sujon, 38, Jasim Uddin, 32, Rasel Khan, 32, and Shahida Begum, 32.
Lt Col Khandaker Golam Sarwar, commanding officer of Rab-3, said Rab conducted a drive at a restaurant in Baridhara on January 7 and detained three men in connection with human trafficking, including the prime suspect Selimuzzaman.
They also detained 12 human traffickers including an airport cleaner, Rasel, from the airport area. Rasel helped the clients to pass the immigration illegally, claimed Rab. They also rescued 10 victims from the Dhaka airport while being trafficked to Malaysia on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, another victim Suman who was rescued by Bangladesh embassy in Libya returned home yesterday. He narrated his ordeal to reporters at the press briefing.
During the drives, Rab also seized passports, fake visas, equipment for preparing forged documents and Tk 16 lakh.
