15 injured as Sylhet villagers clash over beating businessman
At least 15 people were injured in a clash between locals of two upazilas on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway in Sylhet yesterday morning following a beating of a local businessman.
Witnesses said on Saturday the businessman of Jugirgaon village in Mogolgaon union of Sadar upazila was beaten up by some unknown locals at Lamakazi Bazar of Lamakazi union in Bishwanath upazila.
Yesterday when Sadar Upazila Chairman Ashfaq Ahmed was trying to settle Saturday's incident holding an arbitration, the locals of the two unions locked into an altercation again. Later, following announcements from mosques, over 1,000 people of 17 villages of the two unions resorted to the clash blocking the highway.
Akther Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Polics Station, said police brought the situation under control by firing bullets and tear gas shells.
The injured were taken to hospitals, he added.
Additional police personnel have been deployed there to avoid further untoward incidents.
